Paro-Thimphu – Buddha Point Short Hike
Arrive in Paro, one of the most scenic airports in the world. After clearing immigration and visa formalities, you’ll be welcomed by your local Bhutanese guide. Begin your journey with a beautiful drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital nestled in a broad valley.
After checking into your hotel and taking time to rest and refresh, the afternoon is reserved for a gentle nature-based activity designed to help you acclimatize to the higher altitude and settle into Bhutan’s serene pace.
Next, head to Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the valley, perched above the city. It is a cherished place where local families bring their children for blessings. Enjoy the quiet atmosphere, spin prayer wheels, and take in sweeping views of Thimphu below.
This hiking in Bhutan tour begins from Changangkha to Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point), which takes about 1-2 hours. The trail passes through forested ridges and offers gradually expanding views of the valley. Arriving at the colossal 51-meter gilded statue as the afternoon light softens is a memorable way to end your day. From the Buddha point, your vehicle will drive you to your hotel.
Settle into your hotel in Thimphu and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.
02
Thimphu – Phajoding Monastery Hike
Your journey begins with a scenic trek to Phajoding Monastery, a revered retreat perched on the mountainside, far from the usual tourist trail. The 5–6-hour roundtrip hike winds through pine forests, where birdsong and mountain air accompany every step. Far from the usual tourist paths, this serene monastery is a rewarding destination for those who enjoy the solitude of the mountains and a bit of physical challenge.
At the top awaits a peaceful monastic complex with around 10 temples and 15 residences, home to monks and long-term meditators. The atmosphere is one of quiet devotion. The views over Thimphu valley are spectacular, wide, clear, and humbling. You can either rest in stillness or walk quietly through the grounds. The experience is both grounding and unforgettable.
Overnight in Thimphu.
03
Thimphu – Lungchutse Temple Hike
Following breakfast, drive approximately 45 minutes to Dochula Pass at 3,100 meters, a scenic mountain pass marked by the iconic 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. On clear mornings, the pass offers expansive views of Bhutan’s eastern Himalayas.
Begin your hike from behind the Chortens, following a well-marked trail that gradually ascends through pristine forest rich in biodiversity. The path winds through groves of pine, rhododendron, magnolia, and moss-covered trees, with vibrant wild orchids blooming in spring and summer. After about 1.5 to 2 hours of steady hiking, you reach Lungchutse Temple at 3,600 meters. Set on a forested ridge, the temple clearing offers sweeping 360-degree views of major Himalayan peaks and deep valleys stretching across Thimphu and Punakha. This peaceful spot is ideal for a short rest and picnic lunch.
From Lungchutse, continue hiking downhill through old-growth forest toward the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi, descending along a serene path surrounded by towering trees, birdlife, and wildflowers. The entire route, from Dochula Pass to Lungchutse and down to Lamperi, takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on pace. At Lamperi, your vehicle will be waiting for the return drive to Thimphu.
04
Thimphu – Punakha: Nobgang Village Soft Hike
This morning, depart Thimphu and drive toward Punakha, enjoying a scenic journey through forested hills and river valleys. Hiking in Bhutan is usually a series of ups and downs. Today’s descent will take us to the warmer subtropical region of Punakha, observe the transformation in vegetation and landscape. After a relaxed lunch in Lobesa, continue to Yebesa or Kabisa village, where you will begin one of Punakha’s signature hikes.
Upon arrival in Punakha, take a scenic 30 to 45-minute drive to Nobgang, a serene hilltop village west of Punakha. Known as the ancestral home of Bhutan’s four Queen Mothers, Nobgang offers stunning views over the Punakha and Wangdue valleys, framed by terraced rice fields and pine forests. Here, enjoy a gentle hike exploring the village and its surroundings. This easy walk, typically lasting about one hour, allows for immersive interaction with local villagers and an opportunity to appreciate the tranquil rural lifestyle.
From Nobgang, embark on a beautiful downhill walk to Punakha Dzong. This approximately 2-hour route traverses classic Himalayan foothill scenery, farmland, and forest, with a gradual descent suitable for most fitness levels.
Highlights of the Nobgang hike include panoramic valley vistas, rustic village charm, and visits to local temples and memorial chortens. With advance arrangements, guests may also experience Bhutanese hospitality firsthand at a traditional farmhouse. After completing your hike, return to your hotel in Punakha for a restful evening.
05
Punakha – Kabji-Hoka Tsho Hike
Set off from Punakha town after an early breakfast for a scenic one-hour drive to the trailhead near Chorten Nyingpo, close to Kabisa village. From here, your hiking in Bhutan journey winds along well-maintained paths following an irrigation channel through peaceful forest and farmland. The trail gently threads through small local hamlets, shaded broadleaf forests, and occasional marshy patches with wooden footbridges, offering an immersive hiking in Bhutan experience.
As you progress, the path leads deeper into quiet alpine woodlands where the sounds of birds and rustling leaves accompany your steps. Seasonal wildflowers and rare Himalayan monals may appear along the route, especially in spring and early summer. The terrain is moderate, with some uphill stretches and areas that can be slippery after rain, requiring steady footing.
After hiking for about 4-5 hours, you arrive at the serene Kabji-Hoka Tsho Lake, situated at an altitude of around 2,100 to 2,700 meters. This secluded glacial lake lies cradled by dense forest and offers tranquil waters teeming with birdlife and occasional fish sightings. Take time to rest and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
Return to Punakha in the late afternoon for a restful evening after a rewarding day fully immersed in Bhutan’s pristine wilderness.
06
Punakha – Khamsum Yulley Hike – Phobjikha
After breakfast, take a 25 km drive to Yebesa village in the upper Punakha Valley, where you will begin the hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Cross a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River and follow a trail through rice fields and forest towards the hilltop shrine. The uphill walk takes approximately 40–50 minutes, depending on your pace.
Commissioned by Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, the four-storey chorten was built to promote peace and protect Bhutan from harm. Explore its intricately decorated interiors and climb to the upper levels for panoramic views of the Mo Chhu River and the fertile Punakha Valley. After your visit, descend to the valley floor and return to your vehicle.
Next, visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most remarkable fortress-monasteries. Set at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, the dzong is renowned for its traditional architecture, ornate woodwork and beautifully decorated courtyards. It also holds considerable historical importance as the former seat of Bhutan’s government and the winter residence of the central monastic body.
After exploring the dzong, enjoy lunch in Punakha before setting off for Phobjikha Valley. The drive takes you into the central highlands, where forested mountain slopes give way to the broad, open landscape of the valley. On arrival, check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening.
07
Phobjikha – Gangtey Nature Trail
Begin the day with a visit to Gangtey Monastery, one of the most important centres of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in Bhutan. The monastery occupies a prominent position above Phobjikha Valley, with sweeping views across the open grasslands and surrounding hills. Explore its courtyards and temple interiors, and learn about the religious traditions that have shaped life in this remote valley.
After the monastery visit, set out on the Gangtey Nature Trail, an easy circular walk of approximately 4 km. The trail descends gently from the monastery towards the valley floor, passes traditional farmhouses and open meadows, and follows sections of woodland before returning to the starting area. Along the way, enjoy views of the broad valley, its scattered settlements and the forested slopes beyond.
This is one of Bhutan’s gentlest nature walks, with a relatively modest distance and manageable terrain. After several days of more demanding hikes, the trail offers a welcome opportunity to enjoy the countryside without strenuous climbing. The route also provides a closer look at rural life in Phobjikha, where traditional farms and small settlements occupy the valley’s open landscape.
Return to your hotel after the walk. The remainder of the day is free for relaxation or independent exploration around the valley. During the black-necked crane season, generally from late October to March, you may also have an opportunity to visit the local crane information centre and learn about conservation efforts in Phobjikha.
08
Phobjikha – Bumthang
Following breakfast, depart Phobjikha and travel east towards Bumthang, one of Bhutan’s most historically significant regions. The road crosses mountain passes and winds through forested hills, with changing views of rural settlements and the central Bhutanese highlands. Allow time for photo stops along the way, as the journey offers some excellent mountain scenery.
Make a stop in Trongsa, a historic town closely associated with Bhutan’s royal family. Visit Trongsa Dzong, an impressive fortress-monastery that occupies a strategic ridge above the Mangde Chhu valley. Its extensive courtyards and layered buildings reflect the site’s importance in Bhutan’s political and religious history. The dzong also played a significant role in the rise of the Wangchuck dynasty, and the first two kings of Bhutan served as Trongsa Penlop before ascending the throne.
If time permits, visit the Ta Dzong, a former watchtower that now houses the Royal Heritage Museum. Its exhibits introduce Bhutan’s monarchy and the historical significance of Trongsa. Enjoy lunch in town before resuming the drive to Bumthang.
Upon arrival in Bumthang, check in at your hotel. Depending on your arrival time and energy levels, you may explore the nearby town at your own pace or simply relax after the long drive. Bumthang is known for its important Buddhist sites and traditional villages, and the following days will provide more opportunities to explore its cultural landscape and surrounding hills.
09
Bumthang – Ngang Lhakhang “Swan Temple” Hike
Embark on a moderate 10-kilometer hiking in Bhutan adventure that takes you deep into one of Bumthang’s most peaceful valleys, starting near Thangbi Goemba.
The trail follows the gentle flow of the Chamkhar Chu river, winding past verdant fields and local Bhutanese villages, where everyday rural life unfolds with quiet grace. Along the way, visit Thangbi Lhakhang, a charming temple nestled among meadows, before ascending gradually through open pastures and patches of pine and oak forest. The path leads to Ngang Yul village, home to the historic Ngang Lhakhang, or “Swan Temple,” renowned for its serene setting and rich local culture, making this a truly immersive hiking in Bhutan experience.
This 5 to 6-hour round trip offers an immersive experience of Bhutanese heritage, showcasing peaceful riverside walking, encounters with welcoming villagers, and panoramic views of lush valley landscapes. The harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural richness makes this hike a memorable highlight in the heart of Bumthang. Spend the night relaxing in your comfortable accommodation in Bumthang.

Tharpaling Monastery & Kikila Ridge Hike
Today, embark on a hiking in Bhutan adventure along a trail that sees few visitors but offers astounding beauty. Beginning at Tharpaling Monastery, a sacred retreat known for its profound spiritual atmosphere, you may choose to hike up from below or be driven to the ridge trailhead. The route follows the panoramic Kikila Ridge at approximately 3,500 meters, offering sweeping, uninterrupted views of surrounding peaks, lush valleys, and local sights like fluttering prayer flags in the alpine breeze. After traversing this stunning ridge, the trail descends through fragrant pine forests, culminating at the impressive Jakar Dzong, a historic fortress that crowns the Bumthang valley, making this a truly memorable hiking in Bhutan experience.
Covering 12 to 14 kilometers over 5 to 6 hours, mostly level or downhill after the initial ascent, this hike is ideal for keen hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. It perfectly blends high-altitude landscapes, cultural depth, and breathtaking scenery, making it one of the most spectacular hikes in Central Bhutan. Overnight in Bumthang.
11
Fly to Paro – Zuri Dzong Hike
Start your day with a short drive to Jakar Airport for a scenic flight to Paro, a Himalayan valley celebrated for its dramatic landscapes and rich spiritual heritage.
Upon arrival and after checking into your hotel, set out on an easy yet rewarding hiking in Bhutan experience to Zuri Dzong, one of the country’s oldest fortresses. This short walk combines natural beauty, historical intrigue, and convenient access. Starting just above Paro town near the National Museum (Ta Dzong), the trail winds gently uphill through lush local forests of pine and cypress. Along the way, soak in panoramic views of the Paro Valley and Rinpung Dzong, perfect for photography. The path, approximately 1.9 km long and taking around an hour one way, is well-marked and ideal for most fitness levels, making it a memorable hiking in Bhutan experience.
As you ascend, you’ll pass a 400-year-old cypress tree wrapped in legend and a small wooden bridge over a stream, both adding a touch of folklore and serenity to the experience. At the top stands Zuri Dzong, built in 1352 as a defensive fortress with thick stone walls and narrow slits designed for archers. Today, it’s a tranquil retreat surrounded by ancient trees and calm air. Inside, you’ll find murals and chapels dedicated to the protective deity Zaa (Rahula), as well as a meditation cave believed to have been used by the Buddha in the 8th century. The peaceful courtyard invites quiet reflection and rest.
Overnight in Paro.
12
Hike to Tiger’s Nest
A memorable hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest is scheduled for today. After an early breakfast, we drive a short distance to the trailhead and begin our hike.
Perched dramatically on a sheer cliff face at 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level, Tiger’s Nest is one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to subdue a local demon, meditating in the caves for three months. The monastery complex, built around those caves, clings impossibly to the cliffs and is both spiritually profound and visually awe-inspiring.
The hike takes around 4 to 5 hours’ round trip, with an option to rest midway at a viewpoint café, offering a perfect vantage point for photos and a cup of tea. For those who prefer not to walk the entire distance, ponies are available up to the halfway point.
Once at the top, you’ll have time to explore the monastery’s inner sanctums, listen to the wind flutter through the prayer flags, and absorb the peaceful energy of this mystical site.
After descending and returning to Paro, the rest of the afternoon and evening is free for you to relax or explore the town at your own pace. It’s a perfect opportunity to reflect on your journey and perhaps pick up a few Bhutanese souvenirs. Overnight in Paro.

Trip Info
Bhutan Countryside Hiking
Bhutan Countryside Hiking is a 13-day guided hiking tour with hotel accommodation and no camping. It is designed for travelers who want to explore Bhutan’s forests, meadows, mountain trails and rural villages through a series of day hikes rather than a continuous multi-day trek. The itinerary covers western and central Bhutan, with private vehicle transfers between destinations and a hotel stay at the end of each day’s activities. A reasonable level of fitness is required, as most hikes are of moderate difficulty and include uphill sections, uneven terrain and walking at higher elevations.
The hiking programme includes Phajoding Monastery and Lungchutse Temple near Thimphu, the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten trail in Punakha, the Gangtey Nature Trail in Phobjikha, and hiking routes around Bumthang. Most hiking days include a packed lunch, depending on the route and local arrangements. A few walks are gentler and take approximately two to three hours, which provides some variation in physical effort throughout the journey.
This hotel-based hiking tour also includes visits to important Buddhist monasteries and historic dzongs, with the hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro near the end of the itinerary. A private guide accompanies you throughout the journey, and vehicle transfers connect the hiking areas.
There is no need to carry camping equipment or overnight trekking gear, making this itinerary suitable for active travellers who want a varied hiking experience with the practical comforts of hotel accommodation.
Bhutan Countryside Hiking is designed for travellers who want to explore Bhutan’s forests, mountain trails and rural villages without committing to a lengthy camping trek. This 13-day tour is a combination of guided day hikes with private vehicle transfers and comfortable hotel stays throughout the journey.
This tour is a good fit if you:
- Prefer hotels to camping: Sleep in hotels every night. No camping or overnight trekking equipment is required.
- Want a shorter hiking holiday: Explore several regions of Bhutan in 13 days rather than spending several weeks on a continuous trek.
- Enjoy varied hiking routes: Walk through forests, visit remote monasteries and explore traditional countryside.
- Want to combine hiking with culture: Visit remote Buddhist monasteries, historic dzongs and rural settlements along the route.
- Prefer a flexible trekking format: Return to your hotel after each day’s hike, with private vehicle transfers between destinations.
Fitness and Hiking Difficulty
Most hikes are of moderate difficulty and involve uphill sections, uneven terrain and walking at higher elevations. A reasonable level of fitness is necessary, and previous hiking experience is beneficial.
A few walks are gentler and take approximately two to three hours. The overall physical demands vary by route, so you should be comfortable walking for several hours on some days.
Is This a Budget Hiking Tour?
The hotel-based format can help keep the overall holiday cost lower than a longer expedition, simply because the trip lasts 13 days rather than several weeks. However, the final price depends on accommodation standards, transport arrangements and applicable Bhutan tourism charges.
This is a shorter alternative to an extended trekking expedition, not necessarily a low-cost holiday.
Spring (March–May) and Autumn (late September–November) are the best seasons for Bhutan Countryside Hiking. Both offer generally favorable conditions for day hikes across western and central Bhutan, though temperatures vary between lower valleys and higher mountain areas.
