Pokhara – Thasang

Our overland tour begins today as we take a 4X4 and head north into the dramatic Kali Gandaki Valley, one of the deepest river gorges in the world. The road gradually climbs through changing landscapes where subtropical forests slowly give way to drier Himalayan terrain. Passing through villages, waterfalls, and winding mountain roads, the scenery becomes increasingly rugged as the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges rise prominently on both sides.

Continuing deeper into Mustang, the route passes through Kalopani, a peaceful settlement known for its pine forests, traditional houses, and impressive mountain scenery. The drive then continues toward Kobang, a beautiful Himalayan village characterized by stone houses, narrow alleys, apple orchards, and strong Tibetan cultural influences.

By late afternoon, arrive in the Thasang region, surrounded by quiet mountain landscapes and the flowing Kali Gandaki River below. The calmer pace and cooler mountain air make this an ideal location for acclimatization before continuing farther north into Upper Mustang.

The evening remains free to relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the valley.

Best Time to Do This Tour

The best time to explore Upper Mustang is during March to June and October to November, when weather conditions are generally stable, mountain views are clear, and overland travel through the Himalayan valleys is at its most comfortable.

Spring Season: March – June
Average Day Temperature: 12°C – 24°C in lower regions
Average Day Temperature in Upper Mustang: 8°C – 18°C
Night Temperature in Upper Mustang: 2°C – 8°C

Spring and early summer are among the finest times to visit Upper Mustang. During these months, the weather is usually stable, temperatures remain comfortable, and visibility across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges is often excellent. Lower Mustang villages such as Kalopani, Kobang, and Marpha become greener and more vibrant, while the higher desert landscapes remain dry and dramatic.

Autumn Season: October – November
Average Day Temperature: 10°C – 24°C in lower regions
Average Day Temperature in Upper Mustang: 7°C – 16°C
Night Temperature in Upper Mustang: 3°C – 5°C

Autumn is considered one of the classic Himalayan travel seasons. Following the monsoon, skies are often exceptionally clear, creating magnificent mountain views throughout the Kali Gandaki Valley and Upper Mustang. Temperatures are generally pleasant during the day, while evenings become cooler at higher elevations.

Monsoon / Summer Season: July – September
Average Day Temperature: 18°C – 28°C in lower regions
Average Day Temperature in Upper Mustang: 10°C – 20°C
Night Temperature in Upper Mustang: 5°C – 10°C

Upper Mustang remains one of the few Himalayan regions in Nepal that can still be visited during the monsoon season because it lies within the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The landscapes around Lo Manthang and the upper valleys generally remain relatively dry compared to other trekking regions of Nepal.

However, travelers should be aware that the lower regions of the journey, particularly around Kathmandu, Pokhara, and sections of the Kali Gandaki Valley, can experience heavy rainfall, occasional road delays, landslides, and reduced visibility during this period.

Note: During this season, a direct flight from Pokhara to Jomsom would be ideal.

Accommodations

Accommodations throughout this Upper Mustang Luxury Tour have been carefully selected to provide the highest level of comfort available in each destination while still maintaining a strong connection to the landscapes and culture of the Himalayas. From elegant city hotels to charming mountain lodges in remote Mustang villages, the properties used on this journey are chosen for their atmosphere, location, hospitality, cleanliness, and overall travel experience.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, guests stay in 4-5 STAR boutique or luxury hotels offering modern comforts, spacious rooms, excellent service, and refined amenities. In Pokhara and Sarangkot, accommodations are selected for their peaceful surroundings and mountain views, creating a relaxing atmosphere before and after the Upper Mustang journey.

As the route enters the Himalayan regions of Lower and Upper Mustang, accommodations naturally become more intimate and regionally styled. In destinations such as Thasang, Muktinath Temple, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang, the lodges and boutique mountain properties are among the finest available in these remote Himalayan areas.

Many of the lodges feature traditional Mustang-inspired architecture, cozy dining spaces, scenic courtyards, and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Staying in these carefully selected properties becomes an important part of the overall experience.

Vehicles & Ground Transfers

Transportation throughout this Upper Mustang Luxury Tour has been carefully planned to ensure comfort, safety, flexibility, and reliability while traveling through Nepal’s diverse Himalayan terrain. From airport arrivals and city transfers to remote mountain roads deep within Upper Mustang, all ground transportation is provided using comfortable private vehicles operated by experienced Himalayan drivers.

For the overland section of the journey, guests travel in private luxury SUV 4×4 vehicles, specifically selected for the rugged mountain roads of Mustang and the Kali Gandaki Valley. These vehicles are well suited for high-altitude travel and provide a comfortable experience across a combination of paved roads, gravel sections, remote Himalayan tracks, and mountain terrain.

The spacious interiors, elevated seating, and strong road handling of the vehicles allow travelers to enjoy the journey comfortably while taking in the spectacular Himalayan scenery along the route.

Food & Dining

Food is an important part of the travel experience, and this journey offers an opportunity to enjoy both Nepalese hospitality and the distinctive flavors of the Himalayan region. Throughout the tour, meals are served in carefully selected hotels and lodges, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients, hearty portions, and hygienic preparation. Travelers can expect a variety of Nepali dishes, including the country’s staple meal, Dal Bhat, as well as seasonal vegetables, soups, noodles, rice dishes, and regional specialties influenced by Tibetan culture. In Mustang, dining often reflects the traditions of the high Himalayas, where warming meals and locally sourced ingredients have sustained communities for generations.

Western food options are also widely available throughout the journey, particularly in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Sarangkot, and the more established lodges of Mustang. Guests can enjoy a selection of familiar dishes such as eggs, toast, pancakes, porridge, pasta, pizza, sandwiches, salads, grilled meats, and baked goods. While menus naturally become more limited in remote areas such as Tsarang and Lo Manthang, most lodges continue to offer a range of international meals alongside local cuisine. Travelers with dietary preferences or restrictions can generally be accommodated with advance notice, allowing for a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience throughout the tour.

Visa & Permits

A small number of travel documents are required for visiting Upper Mustang. As this region lies within a protected area of Nepal, special permits are mandatory in addition to a valid Nepal tourist visa.

Nepal Tourist Visa

Most international travelers can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at designated land border crossings. Travelers must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their date of entry and pay the applicable visa fee.

Nepal offers tourist visas for 15, 30, and 90 days. For this itinerary, a 15-day tourist visa is generally sufficient for most travelers. Visitors are required to complete the necessary visa application formalities upon arrival before receiving their visa.

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Upper Mustang is one of Nepal’s most culturally significant and carefully protected regions. Bordering Tibet, the area has preserved a unique Tibetan Buddhist heritage, traditional settlements, ancient monasteries, and remarkable trans-Himalayan landscapes. To safeguard this cultural and environmental legacy, access to Upper Mustang is regulated through a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

The permit is compulsory for all foreign visitors entering Upper Mustang and can only be arranged through a licensed Nepali tour operator. Independent travel is not permitted within the restricted area.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

In addition to the Restricted Area Permit, all travelers must also obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Since Upper Mustang falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area, this permit is required for entry and supports conservation initiatives, sustainable tourism programs, and environmental protection efforts throughout the region.

Permit Arrangements

We will arrange all necessary permits and documentation on your behalf prior to the tour.

Road Conditions

Road conditions on this journey vary considerably as the route travels from Nepal’s major cities into some of the most remote regions of the Himalayas. The sections between Kathmandu and Pokhara are primarily paved highways, although travelers should expect occasional roadworks, uneven surfaces, and mountain curves that are common throughout Nepal. These roads are generally comfortable but can be slower than distances might suggest due to terrain and traffic conditions.

Beyond Pokhara, the route enters the Kali Gandaki Valley and gradually becomes more adventurous. Roads through destinations such as Kalopani, Thasang, Muktinath Temple, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang include a combination of gravel roads, mountain tracks, and unpaved sections. Some stretches can be dusty, bumpy, and uneven, particularly after periods of rain or strong winds. These conditions are part of what makes Upper Mustang feel remote and authentic, preserving the region’s sense of isolation and adventure.

To ensure the highest level of comfort possible, all overland travel is conducted using private luxury SUV 4×4 vehicles designed for Himalayan terrain. These vehicles provide greater stability, comfort, and safety on rough roads while allowing travelers to enjoy the spectacular landscapes along the route. Experienced drivers familiar with Mustang’s road conditions further contribute to a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Altitude Concerns

This journey travels into the high-altitude landscapes of Upper Mustang, reaching a maximum overnight elevation of approximately 3,840m in Lo Manthang. While most travelers complete the tour comfortably, some may experience mild altitude-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, headaches, or fatigue.

The itinerary has been carefully designed with gradual altitude gain and multiple overnight stops to support acclimatization. As this is an overland journey with limited physical exertion, it is generally suitable for most travelers in good health.

We recommend staying well hydrated, taking things at a comfortable pace, and consulting your physician before travel if you have any concerns regarding high-altitude destinations.

Highest Elevations
Kathmandu – 1,400m
Pokhara – 822m
Thasang – 2,560m
Tsarang – 3,560m
Muktinath – 3,760m

FAQs

Is Upper Mustang suitable for non-trekkers?
Yes. This itinerary has been designed as a luxury overland journey rather than a trekking expedition. Most sightseeing involves short walks around villages, monasteries, viewpoints, and cultural sites. No previous trekking experience is required.
How much walking is involved?
Daily walking is generally light and optional. Most guests can comfortably participate in the sightseeing activities, although some monastery visits and village explorations may involve uneven stone paths, stairs, and gentle inclines.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Absolutely. As this is a private journey for two travelers, the itinerary can be adjusted to suit your interests, pace, and travel preferences. Additional nights, cultural experiences, photography-focused stops, or extensions to other destinations can be arranged upon request.
What kind of cultural experiences can I expect?
Upper Mustang offers one of the most authentic Tibetan Buddhist cultural experiences in the Himalayas. Travelers can explore centuries-old monasteries, traditional villages, royal heritage sites, prayer walls, chortens, and communities that have preserved their customs and way of life for generations.
Is there internet and mobile connectivity in Mustang?
Most lodges offer Wi-Fi access, and mobile network coverage is available in many parts of Mustang. However, connections can be slower and less reliable than in major cities, particularly in remote areas of Upper Mustang.
What currency should I bring?
The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the local currency used throughout the journey. While hotels in Kathmandu may accept major credit cards, cash remains the preferred payment method in many parts of Mustang. We recommend carrying sufficient Nepalese Rupees for personal expenses, beverages, souvenirs, and gratuities.
Are there ATMs in Upper Mustang?
ATMs are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Jomsom. Beyond Jomsom, banking facilities are extremely limited. There is an ATM in Mustang with a withdrawal limited of Rs. 15,000/-. However it may be unreliable so it’s always better to carry cash.
What type of electricity is available?
Nepal uses 230V electricity with Type C, D, and M plugs. Most hotels and lodges provide charging facilities, although occasional power interruptions may occur in remote mountain regions.
Will I have opportunities to interact with local communities?
Yes. One of the highlights of this journey is the opportunity to spend time in traditional Mustang villages, visit local monasteries, and observe daily life in one of the Himalayas’ most culturally preserved regions. Interactions are often informal, authentic, and highly rewarding.
Are monastery visits included in the tour?
Yes. The itinerary includes visits to several important monasteries, including those in Muktinath, Tsarang, Lo Manthang, and Ghar Gompa. These visits provide insight into the spiritual traditions and cultural heritage of the region.
Can photography be taken inside monasteries?
No. Photography in the monasteries of Lo Manthang is strictly prohibited. However, taking pictures from outside is permitted.
Will we see snow during the journey?
Snow is possible during the colder months, particularly around Muktinath and Lo Manthang. During spring and autumn departures, travelers are more likely to enjoy clear mountain views with snow-capped peaks visible in the distance rather than snowfall itself.
Are there opportunities to purchase local handicrafts?
Yes. Villages such as Lo Manthang, Tsarang, and Kathmandu offer opportunities to purchase local handicrafts, handmade textiles, traditional jewelry, prayer items, and other souvenirs produced by local artisans.
What wildlife can be seen in Mustang?
Although Mustang is primarily known for its culture and landscapes, the region is home to Himalayan wildlife including blue sheep, Himalayan griffon vultures, golden eagles, and other high-altitude bird species. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed but can be a rewarding part of the journey.
What languages are spoken in Mustang?
The local population primarily speaks Tibetan dialects and Nepali. English is commonly spoken by guides and lodge staff involved in tourism, making communication straightforward throughout the journey.
What makes this overland journey special?
Traveling overland allows you to witness the gradual transformation of Nepal’s landscapes, from lush river valleys and pine forests to the high-altitude deserts of Mustang. This transition is one of the most fascinating aspects of the experience and is often missed by travelers who fly directly into the region.
