Trip Info
Darjeeling Sikkim Tour
This 8-Day Darjeeling Sikkim Tour is designed for travelers who want to experience the diverse character of the Eastern Himalayas within a relatively short journey. The trip brings together dramatic mountain scenery, renowned tea-growing landscapes, Buddhist heritage, colonial-era hill towns and traditional Himalayan communities.
Darjeeling provides the classic introduction, with its tea estates, heritage atmosphere and spectacular views towards Kanchenjunga, while Sikkim adds a deeper cultural dimension through its monasteries and quieter mountain landscapes. The journey continues to Kalimpong, adding another distinctive hill town and completing a route that showcases the region’s varied scenery and heritage.
A major attraction of the trip is the opportunity to experience the Eastern Himalayas from several different perspectives. You can visit monasteries where Tibetan Buddhist traditions remain an important part of local life, walk through historic hill towns, explore lively local markets and stop at viewpoints for wide mountain panoramas.
This Darjeeling Sikkim Tour also includes Yuksom, the historic first capital of Sikkim, where the landscape and history of the former Himalayan kingdom come together. Tea lovers can learn more about Darjeeling’s famous tea culture, while travelers interested in photography will find changing landscapes throughout the journey, from cultivated slopes and forested hills to distant snow-covered peaks and misty mountain valleys.
Autumn (September to November): This is considered the peak tourist season in Sikkim and Darjeeling, especially for trekking and outdoor activities. The weather is cool and dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Clear skies provide breathtaking views of the Himalayas, making it a perfect time for exploring places like Darjeeling, Pelling, Gangtok, and Kalimpong, from where the Singalila Mountain Range with the third highest mountain, Kanchenjunga / Khangchendzonga, will be visible as well as enjoying popular festivals like Dashain and Tihar, which offer a glimpse into local culture and traditions.
Spring (March to May): Another excellent time to visit, spring is marked by warmer temperatures, ranging from 20°C to 30°C . The season is characterized by blooming flowers, especially rhododendrons in the hilly regions. The landscape is vibrant with greenery, and the clear weather makes it ideal for photography and sightseeing. It’s a great season for tours, with temperatures being comfortable for outdoor activities. It is also a great time to smell the aromatic Darjeeling tea being freshly manufactured in the orthodox method in the many tea factories around Darjeeling.
Accommodations on this trip are carefully selected 3–4 star hotels that provide a comfortable and convenient base throughout your journey. All stays are arranged on a twin or double-sharing basis, with single-room accommodation available at an additional cost for travelers who prefer greater privacy.
Hotels are chosen based on their location, cleanliness, service and overall comfort, allowing you to relax and recharge after each day of sightseeing and travel.
Rooms generally include essential amenities such as comfortable beds, private bathrooms, Wi-Fi and other standard facilities, while hotel restaurants provide convenient options for meals during your stay.
The food on this tour offers a delightful mix of authentic Himalayan flavors with local cuisine from Nepali, Tibetan, Bhutia, and Lepcha societies and familiar Western options to suit all tastes. You’ll enjoy traditional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) and Sel roti (a sweet rice donut), , Tibetan momo (dumplings) and phaleys (thick Tibetan bread) giving you a true taste of the local culture.
However, we also understand the need for variety, so Western food options like pasta, pizza, and sandwiches will be available at many of the hotels and restaurants you visit, providing you with comfort and choice throughout your journey.
Transportation throughout the tour is arranged in a comfortable Toyota Innova, a practical choice for travelling through the winding mountain roads of Darjeeling and Sikkim. The Innova provides a comfortable amount of space for passengers and luggage while making it easier to navigate the narrow and often winding roads found in the hill regions.
For groups of three or more travelers, an additional SUV will be provided to ensure everyone has sufficient space and can travel comfortably. We generally do not recommend coaches or larger vehicles for this itinerary, as many of the roads are narrow, winding and have limited space for larger vehicles.
Entry to certain areas of Sikkim is subject to additional restrictions because of their proximity to international borders. Travelers visiting these areas may require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), also commonly referred to as an Inner Line Permit, in addition to a valid Indian visa. The specific permit requirements depend on the destinations included in your itinerary and current government regulations.
Indian Visa
Depending on your preference, you can apply for a 30-day, 1-year, or 5-year e-Visa, with multiple entries permitted for longer options. The process is entirely online. Simply complete the application, upload a passport photo and copy, pay the fee, and receive the approved visa via email within a few days. It’s a fast and secure way to enter India without visiting an embassy or consulate.
Requirements:
- Passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date
- Minimum of two blank pages for immigration stamps
- Recent passport-size photo and passport bio page scan
- Return or onward flight ticket
Online application through the official website: Indian E-Visa Application

The landscape continually shifts as you travel, from forested slopes and river valleys to cultivated hillsides, mist-covered mountains and distant snow-capped peaks.

In Martam, a short hike through the Rice Valley takes you past terraced fields and rural landscapes where local farming remains an important part of village life. You will also travel through small settlements, tea-growing areas and riverside communities along the route. Staying at a local-style property in Martam adds another opportunity to experience the hospitality and quieter pace of life found in the Sikkimese countryside.
Scenic Drives and Short Hikes
Road travel with several short walks that allow you to experience the landscape at a slower pace. The hike around Kecheopalri Lake, the walk to Rabdentse Palace Ruins, the ascent to Tashiding Monastery and the Martam Rice Valley hike each provide a different perspective on the region. The drives themselves are also an important part of the Darjeeling Sikkim tour, and takes you through winding mountain roads, tea plantations, forests, valleys and traditional villages.
Darjeeling Toy Train Experience
A highlight of the Darjeeling portion is a ride on the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Toy Train. The railway is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms an important part of Darjeeling’s heritage. The joyride offers a relaxed way to experience the town’s historic railway tradition while taking in views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
Wildlife and Himalayan Conservation
The Darjeeling Sikkim Tour also introduces you to the region’s conservation efforts. At the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling, you can learn about conservation programmes for Himalayan species including the red panda and snow leopard. The nearby Himalayan Mountaineering Institute adds another perspective, and offers insight on the history and development of mountaineering in the Himalayas.
Markets, Crafts and Local Flavours
In Darjeeling, you can browse for locally produced tea and souvenirs around Mall Road, while Gangtok’s M.G. Road and Lal Bazaar offer opportunities to explore shops and sample local food. Kalimpong adds its own character through its markets, flower nurseries and cafés, where you can take a break and enjoy Himalayan coffee while exploring the town. Together, these experiences give the Darjeeling Sikkim Tour a broader sense of the region’s culture and contemporary mountain life.
