Detailed Itinerary
01
Arrival in Paro – Thimphu
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet your guide and driver for the transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Make a stop at Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple associated with the great bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo. A traditional iron suspension bridge leads across the Paro River to the temple.
Reach Thimphu and check in at your hotel. In the late afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong for the flag-lowering ceremony. As the working seat of Bhutan’s government and one of Thimphu’s most important landmarks, the dzong takes on a particularly atmospheric setting as the day comes to a close. Overnight in Thimphu.
02
Thimphu Exploration
Begin your Thimphu sightseeing with a visit to the Memorial Chorten, a prominent landmark where locals come to pray and circumambulate the golden-topped stupa. Proceed to the Folk Heritage Museum, where traditional rural life is presented through a collection of household objects, tools and exhibits.
At Zorig Chusum, also known as the School of Traditional Arts, see students learning Bhutan’s traditional arts and crafts. The school preserves skills such as painting, woodcarving, embroidery and sculpture.
After lunch, make your way to Buddha Dordenma, a 169-foot-tall statue overlooking Thimphu Valley. The statue houses thousands of smaller Buddha images and offers broad views across the capital. Enjoy some time at the Crafts Bazaar, where stalls display Bhutanese handicrafts and locally made products.
An optional evening stroll around Clock Tower Square provides an easy way to experience the city at a relaxed pace. Overnight in Thimphu.
03
Thimphu – Punakha
Depart Thimphu for Punakha along one of Bhutan’s most scenic mountain roads. Make a stop at Dochula Pass, situated at around 3,100 meters. On a clear day, the pass provides views of the Himalayan peaks, while the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens create a distinctive setting among the surrounding mountains.
Proceed to the village of Sopsokha in Lobesa, where a short walk through the village leads to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility temple associated with Drukpa Kunley, Bhutan’s revered “Divine Madman.”
After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most impressive architectural landmarks. Set at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong has played an important role in Bhutan’s religious and political history. Overnight in Punakha.
04
Punakha – Phobjikha
Leave Punakha in the morning and drive toward Wangdue Phodrang, one of the important towns of central Bhutan. Make a stop in Bajo, the district’s main commercial centre, for a short exploration of the local market area. Take some time to see the shops and local produce, and get a glimpse of everyday life in this part of Bhutan.
Stop at Nubding, a popular stopping point on the road to Phobjikha, where you can enjoy lunch before the road begins its steady ascent into the mountains. The scenery changes noticeably as the elevation rises, with forests and open mountain slopes replacing the warmer landscapes around Punakha.
Keep ascending toward Lawa La Pass, at around 3,300 meters. Enjoy some time at the pass for photographs and mountain views before beginning the descent toward Phobjikha. The winding road passes through high-altitude forests before the landscape opens into the broad and beautiful Phobjikha Valley.
Settle into your hotel and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this highland valley, known for its wide open meadows, traditional villages and mountain scenery. Depending on your preference, you can take a gentle walk around the surroundings or simply relax at the hotel after the long drive.
Overnight in Phobjikha.
05
Phobjikha Exploration
Start the day with a visit to Gangtey Monastery, one of the most important religious sites in the Phobjikha Valley and a major centre of the Pema Lingpa tradition. Set above the valley, the monastery has a beautiful traditional Bhutanese design, with richly decorated interiors, timber details and spacious courtyards. Take time to explore the monastery grounds and learn about its religious importance before enjoying the views across Phobjikha Valley.
From the monastery, set out on the Gangtey Nature Trail, a gentle walk of around 4 km that begins near the monastery and descends through pine forest, open meadows and traditional farm areas. The trail provides a wonderful way to experience the valley at a slower pace, with broad views of the surrounding mountains and opportunities to see rural homes, farmland and local life along the way.
Enjoy a picnic lunch during the walk before completing the trail and returning to the valley.
Return to the hotel in the afternoon and enjoy some well-earned downtime. With a long drive to Bumthang ahead the following day, the late afternoon is kept free for relaxation.
Overnight in Phobjikha.
06
Phobjikha – Bumthang
Set out early for Bumthang, one of Bhutan’s longest overland journeys. The road passes through Pele La Pass, at around 3,420 meters, before descending toward Trongsa. The landscape changes noticeably along the way, with high mountain terrain giving way to deeper valleys and forested slopes.
Make a stop at Chendebji Chorten, a distinctive Nepalese-style stupa built near the Chendebji River. Reach Trongsa and proceed through the rugged terrain toward Bumthang. The route crosses Yotong La Pass, at approximately 3,400 meters, before descending into the Bumthang Valley.
Arrive in Bumthang in the late afternoon and check in at your hotel. The remainder of the day is reserved for rest after the long drive.
07
Attend Nimalung Festival
Take a short morning drive to Nimalung Dratshang in Chumey Valley for the second day of the Nimalung Tshechu. The day features a series of sacred masked dances and traditional community performances, giving you an opportunity to experience one of Bumthang’s most important religious festivals alongside local devotees.
Among the dances that may feature in the program is the Ging Dang Tsoling Cham, associated with the purification and protection of the festival ground. The Durdag Cham, known as the Dance of the Lords of the Cremation Grounds, features striking skeletal masks and conveys Buddhist teachings on the impermanent nature of life. You may also witness the Shinjay Cham, the Dance of the Lord of Death, along with traditional folk dances accompanied by music, singing and colorful costumes.
Spend the day at the festival, with time to watch the performances, observe the rituals and experience the atmosphere around Nimalung Dratshang. The exact sequence of dances varies by year, so the program for the relevant festival will determine the performances you see.
In the late afternoon, return to your resort in Bumthang and enjoy a relaxing evening.
The first day of Nimalung Tshechu is largely devoted to customary ceremonies, prayers and rituals. We therefore schedule the tour for the second and third days, when guests can experience the main cham dances and community performances, followed by the Guru Tshengye Thongdrol and blessings on the final morning.
08
Attend Nimalung Festival – Bumthang Exploration
Rise very early for the final day of the Nimalung Tshechu. Take a short drive to Nimalung Dratshang before sunrise to witness the unfurling of the Guru Tshengye Thongdrol. The large silk appliqué tapestry depicts the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche and is displayed on the monastery façade for only a brief period.
Devotees gather before the sacred image to receive its blessing. According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, viewing a Thongdrol is believed to purify negative karma and bring spiritual benefit, making this one of the most significant moments of the festival. A packed breakfast from the resort is recommended for the early start.
Stay at the monastery for the morning rituals and the Guru Tshengye Cham, which portrays the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava. After the main festival program, leave Nimalung and head toward Mebar Tsho, or the Burning Lake, in the Tang Valley.
Have lunch at a suitable restaurant along the way before visiting Mebar Tsho, a sacred site associated with the great treasure discoverer Pema Lingpa. The gorge and river hold an important place in Bhutanese religious tradition, and the story of Pema Lingpa’s discovery of sacred treasures here makes the site particularly fascinating.
Thereafter, drive back toward Jakar and visit Jakar Dzong, also known as the Castle of the White Bird. Set above the Bumthang Valley, the dzong provides fine views of the surrounding countryside and offers another perspective on the region’s religious and cultural heritage.
Return to your resort in the late afternoon and enjoy some well-earned rest after the early start and full day of exploration. Overnight in Bumthang.
09
Bumthang – Paro
Take a morning flight from Bumthang to Paro, enjoying an aerial view of Bhutan’s mountains and valleys when weather permits. Upon arrival, meet your guide and driver and proceed to Ta Dzong, the former watchtower that now houses the National Museum of Bhutan.
From Ta Dzong, walk downhill toward Rinpung Dzong, following the historic route through the hillside and into the Paro Valley. Your vehicle will be waiting at the end of the walk for the short drive to your hotel.
Travelers visiting Paro’s Ta Dzong and Rinpung Dzong experience Bhutan’s heritage in two complementary settings. The round watchtower of Ta Dzong houses the National Museum of Bhutan, where seven floors of galleries display ancient thangkas, ritual masks, royal artifacts, and natural-history exhibits, offering a concise overview of Bhutanese art, religion, and history. Just below it, Rinpung Dzong, the “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels,” impresses with its massive whitewashed walls, nail-free timber construction, courtyards, and richly painted temples that still function as a monastery and district headquarters. Together, the two sites provide a compact yet deep introduction to Bhutan’s culture, architecture, and spiritual life.
Spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Paro.
10
Paro – Tiger’s Nest Hike
Dedicate the day to Bhutan’s most famous landmark, Tiger’s Nest Monastery, or Paro Taktsang. Your guide will accompany you throughout the hike as the trail climbs through pine forest toward the monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff above the Paro Valley.
Take a break at the cafeteria viewpoint before tackling the final section of the trail, which includes a long staircase descending toward the waterfall and climbing back up to the monastery. Inside, visit the sacred temples and learn about the monastery’s connection with Guru Rinpoche.
After returning to the valley, enjoy a well-earned lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at your hotel. Overnight in Paro.
11
Paro – Departure
Enjoy your final morning in Bhutan at leisure. At the appropriate time, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your onward journey, with memories of Bhutan’s Nimalung festival, monasteries, mountain landscapes and village life.
