Start with Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest and most impressive mosques. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, the mosque features vast courtyards, elegant domes, and towering minarets.

Continue to Raj Ghat, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, set within peaceful landscaped gardens. From here, drive past important landmarks including the Red Fort, a magnificent Mughal citadel built by Shah Jahan, and the ceremonial avenues of New Delhi.

Visit India Gate, a prominent war memorial dedicated to Indian soldiers who died during World War I. Continue to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, and view the surrounding government buildings and avenues designed during the British colonial period.

Later, visit Humayun’s Tomb, an architectural masterpiece and an important precursor to the design of the Taj Mahal. The symmetrical garden tomb combines Persian and Mughal architectural traditions.

End the day at Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 73-metre-high minaret rises above an impressive complex of medieval monuments, including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and the famous Iron Pillar.

Jaipur Exploration

Drive to the magnificent Amber Fort, located on a hill overlooking Maota Lake, after breakfast. Built from sandstone and marble, the fort combines Rajput and Mughal architectural influences. Explore its grand courtyards, ornate halls, gateways, and richly decorated palace interiors.

Travel Tip: Amber Fort involves uphill walking, courtyards, stairs, and uneven stone surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, along with sun protection, particularly during warmer months. The fort is best explored at a relaxed pace to appreciate its architecture and views.

On the way back to Jaipur, stop at Jal Mahal, the elegant Water Palace situated in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. The palace provides one of the city’s most photogenic views.

Continue to the City Palace, a splendid complex of courtyards, gardens, audience halls, and royal residences. The palace reflects Jaipur’s rich Rajput heritage and remains partly occupied by the former royal family.

Visit Jantar Mantar, an extraordinary collection of monumental astronomical instruments built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The observatory demonstrates the remarkable precision of traditional astronomical calculations.

Today, we will drive to Agra. En route, visit Fatehpur Sikri, the magnificent 16th-century Mughal city built by Emperor Akbar.

At around 40 metres high, it remains one of the most striking gateways in India.

Day  07
Delhi – Paro – Thimphu

In the morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Paro, Bhutan. The flight offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, with dramatic mountain peaks and deep valleys visible on clear days.

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet your Bhutanese guide and driver and begin your journey to Thimphu.

En route, stop at Tamchog Lhakhang, a small but historically important temple located beside the Paro River. The temple is associated with Thangtong Gyalpo, a renowned Tibetan Buddhist master and engineer who is traditionally credited with introducing iron chain bridges to Bhutan. Cross the traditional iron bridge leading to the temple and explore the peaceful surroundings.

Visitor Insight: Two bridges span the river here. While the original, precarious 15th-century iron-chain bridge hangs nearby as a remarkable feat of traditional engineering, you will cross the safer modern suspension bridge, with secure wooden panels underfoot. Walking above the rushing Paro Chhu, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags, makes for a memorable introduction to the Paro Valley.

The drive to Thimphu will continue, following the valley and mountain roads through traditional villages and forested landscapes.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check in at your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Thimphu Exploration

Begin your sightseeing tour of Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital with the impressive Buddha Dordenma Statue, a massive gilded statue of Buddha Shakyamuni overlooking the Thimphu Valley. The hilltop location provides panoramic views of the capital and surrounding mountains.

Make a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu’s most prominent religious landmarks. Built in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, the chorten is visited throughout the day by local residents who come to pray and circumambulate the monument.

After lunch, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, which offers an insight into traditional Bhutanese rural life. The museum is housed in a traditional three-storey rammed-earth and timber building and displays household objects, tools, farming equipment, and other artefacts.

Subsequently, visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, commonly known as the School of Traditional Arts. The institute preserves Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts, including painting, wood carving, embroidery, sculpture, and traditional boot making. Depending on the school schedule, you may have an opportunity to see students practicing these skills.

Later, visit Tashichho Dzong, an imposing fortress-monastery beside the Wang Chhu River. The dzong or fortress is known for its elegant white walls, richly decorated timberwork, and beautifully maintained courtyards.

Travel Insight: High Asia Tours schedules this visit to Tashichho Dzong at around 5:30 PM, when the working day is winding down and the area becomes quieter. Arriving at this time allows you to explore the grand fortress-monastery with fewer vehicles around, while the soft evening light brings out the beauty of its white walls and richly painted timberwork.

Thimphu – Punakha

The morning drive takes you from Thimphu towards Punakha, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass at approximately 3,100 metres. On clear days, the pass offers magnificent views of the Himalayan range. Take some time to admire the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, which stand on the hillside as a symbol of peace and prosperity.

From Dochula, the road descends through forests of rhododendron, magnolia, hemlock, and pine before reaching the warmer Punakha Valley.

Your next stop is Sopsokha Village, a traditional farming settlement surrounded by rice fields. From here, take a pleasant walk through the countryside to Chimi Lhakhang, a small hilltop temple associated with Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the Divine Madman. His unconventional teachings and colourful stories have made him one of Bhutan’s most distinctive religious figures.

The walk to Chimi Lhakhang is part of the experience, taking you along rural paths and through farmland while offering a glimpse into everyday life in the Punakha Valley.

Pre-Arrival Note for Guests: As you walk through Sopsokha, you will notice phallus paintings and carvings on many homes and storefronts. These are traditional symbols associated with fertility, good fortune, and protection from evil spirits, and are an important part of the village’s cultural character.

The journey continues to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most magnificent fortress-monasteries. Set dramatically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong has played a central role in Bhutan’s religious and political history. Explore its courtyards, richly decorated interiors, intricate woodwork, and murals before heading to your hotel.

Paro – Hike to Tiger’s Nest

Following breakfast, drive to the trailhead for the hike to Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as Tiger’s Nest.

Perched dramatically on a cliff approximately 900 metres above the Paro Valley, Taktsang is Bhutan’s most famous monastery and one of its most sacred pilgrimage sites. According to Bhutanese tradition, Guru Padmasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche, meditated here in the 8th century.

The hike takes approximately 4 to 5 hours round trip, depending on walking pace and the time spent at the monastery. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest decorated with prayer flags, with several viewpoints offering spectacular views across the valley and towards the monastery.

Hiking Insight:  The trail to Tiger’s Nest is a steady uphill climb with several flights of stone steps, so there is no need to rush. Our guide will set a comfortable pace, with opportunities to rest along the way. The café halfway up the trail is also a convenient stop for refreshments and a view of the monastery.

After reaching Taktsang, explore the monastery’s temples, shrines, and sacred meditation caves. Take time to appreciate the remarkable setting before beginning the descent. A café located partway along the trail provides an optional rest stop with views of Tiger’s Nest.

Return to Paro after the hike and spend the evening relaxing at your hotel.

Optional Experience: After exploring Paro, you may choose to enjoy a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath. Heated river stones are placed into a wooden bath chamber to warm the water, creating a soothing and relaxing experience that is especially welcome after several days of sightseeing and mountain travel. Trip Info

India and Bhutan Tour

India and Bhutan Tour

The India and Bhutan Tour brings together two remarkably different cultural experiences within a compact 12-day journey. In India, the Golden Triangle takes you through Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, where grand Mughal monuments, Rajput palaces, historic forts, colourful markets, and busy streets create an energetic and visually rich travel experience.

Crossing into Bhutan brings a striking change in atmosphere. The landscape becomes mountainous and heavily forested, towns are smaller and quieter, and Buddhist temples, dzongs, prayer flags, and traditional architecture become part of the everyday scenery. From the bustle of Delhi to the peaceful valleys of Paro and Punakha, the journey offers a fascinating contrast in culture, architecture, lifestyle, and landscape.

The geographical distance between these destinations is relatively short, yet the change in environment is remarkable. Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra lie in the warmer plains of northern India, while Bhutan rises into the eastern Himalayas, bringing cooler temperatures and a distinctly alpine character to the journey. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable conditions, with pleasant daytime temperatures for sightseeing in India and clear mountain views and crisp weather in Bhutan.

This combination makes the India and Bhutan Tour particularly appealing for travellers who want to experience historic cities, Himalayan scenery, two distinctive cultures, and very different travel atmospheres in a single well-paced holiday.

Is This Tour for Me?

This India and Bhutan Tour is ideal for travelers who want to experience two distinctly different destinations in one journey.

This tour is particularly suitable for first-time visitors to India and Bhutan, couples, families, and travelers who prefer a comfortable cultural holiday with a thoughtfully planned itinerary.
