Trip Info
Bisket Jatra is one of the most vibrant and ancient festivals celebrated in Bhaktapur, a historic city near Kathmandu, Nepal. Held every April, this week-long event marks the Nepali New Year and features dramatic chariot processions, traditional music, and local rituals that date back centuries. The most iconic part of the festival is the tug-of-war between two groups of locals as they pull massive wooden chariots carrying images of Lord Bhairab and Goddess Bhadrakali through the narrow streets of Bhaktapur. The energy, crowd, and centuries-old traditions make it one of Nepal’s most captivating cultural experiences.
Celebrated according to the lunar calendar, Bisket Jatra symbolizes the end of one year and the beginning of another. It is not just a New Year celebration but also a deep expression of community identity, cultural pride, and living heritage. Travelers visiting during this time witness rituals that blend Hindu mythology with local folklore, including the erection of a towering ceremonial pole (lingo) and intense street gatherings. For those seeking an authentic cultural festival in Nepal, Bisket Jatra offers a rare opportunity to experience living traditions in their raw, powerful form.
The Bisket Jatra tour offers a rare chance to witness one of Nepal’s most powerful and ancient festivals in Bhaktapur, where the New Year begins not with fireworks, but with a surge of devotion, mythology, and community spirit. You’ll be right there as locals pull towering wooden chariots through medieval squares, raise the sacred lingo pole, and perform age-old rituals that outsiders rarely get to see so closely. Before the festival, the tour includes time to explore the cultural treasures of Kathmandu, its courtyards, stupas, and temples—laying a rich foundation for understanding the history behind the celebration.
After the high energy of Bisket Jatra, the journey continues to Chitwan, where the tempo shifts into the rhythm of the jungle. Spot one-horned rhinos, take a canoe ride along the Rapti River, and enjoy guided walks in the UNESCO-listed national park. Then, travel to Pokhara, where calm lakes, sweeping Himalayan views, and serene moments await. This tour blends vibrant cultural immersion with wildlife adventure and natural beauty, offering an experience that is uniquely and authentically Nepal.
In April, Nepal welcomes spring in full bloom, offering one of the best times to travel across its diverse landscapes.
