Phoksundo Bhanjyang – Kang-La pass – Shey Gompa

The Upper Dolpo trek continues with a challenging ascent on a steep, slate-strewn trail leading up to the Kang-La Pass (5,360m). The path winds through loose black rocks, demanding steady footing and determination. As we climb higher, the panoramic views expand dramatically. Reaching the top of the pass is a rewarding moment—offering sweeping vistas of the barren yet majestic Upper Dolpo landscape. We pause here to catch our breath, take photos, and soak in the surreal beauty.

From the pass, the trail descends sharply into a broad, open valley. The terrain becomes gentler as we follow a river downstream, crossing it several times—sometimes over makeshift log bridges. Along the way, we pass hill caves tucked into the cliffs, and it’s not uncommon to see yaks, mountain goats, and sheep grazing peacefully in the high meadows.

After the final river crossing, the trail leads us to the spiritual heart of Upper Dolpo, the Shey Gompa, a 12th-century monastery nestled beneath the sacred Crystal Mountain. Camp under the stars tonight near Shey Gompa.

We visit the historic Shey Monastery, a revered 800-year-old Bon-Buddhist site nestled beneath the striking Crystal Mountain, which locals consider sacred. Pilgrims often perform a kora (ritual circumambulation) around the mountain—a practice believed to cleanse sins.

The rest of the day can be spent exploring the surrounding valley, relaxing by the riverside, or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance of this high Himalayan sanctuary. Keep an eye out for wildlife, grazing herds, and the quiet rhythm of life in one of the most isolated corners of Nepal.

The path clings to cliff sides, dips into narrow canyons, and crosses the river multiple times over log bridges and rocky fords. The dramatic scenery, echoing river sounds, and occasional sightings of blue sheep or Himalayan birds make this a thrilling and immersive trekking day.

After a long but rewarding hike, we arrive at our campsite near Khanigaon, where we rest amidst the rugged beauty of Dolpo. Overnight camp near Khanigaon

Trip Info

Best time to do this Trek

Autumn: The autumn season, from September to November, is considered the peak trekking season in Nepal. During this period, the weather is clear with crisp skies and mild temperatures, making it an ideal time for hiking at higher altitudes. The landscape becomes especially stunning with vibrant autumn colors, and the trails are well-trodden after the monsoon season. The risk of rainfall is minimal, and visibility is at its best, allowing trekkers to enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas.

Spring: The spring season, from March to May, offers pleasant weather with warmer temperatures compared to autumn, which makes it comfortable for longer treks. Lower elevations come alive with blooming wildflowers, and the snow-capped peaks continue to provide breathtaking views. The air is clear, ensuring good visibility, though higher altitudes can still present challenges due to the lingering cold in the mornings and evenings.

Accommodations

In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, you will be staying at 3 star hotels with have good amenities, are clean, comfortable and safe.

When your Upper Dolpo trek begins, you’ll find a variety of guesthouses, also known as Tea Houses in Nepal, at lower elevations that offer simple rooms with twin beds, often with shared bathrooms. Some lodges even offer hot showers (usually at an extra cost) and Wi-Fi in higher-trafficked areas.

The higher you go, the more remote and minimalistic the accommodations become, but they are still functional and welcoming. Camping provides a wonderful option on this Upper Dolpo Trek, particularly in more isolated areas, where porters and guides will set up tents, and you’ll enjoy hot meals prepared over an open flame.

Food on the Trek

Food on the Upper Dolpo Trek is simple, hearty, and designed to keep you energized throughout the challenging journey. In the lower regions like Dunai and Nepalgunj, you’ll have access to a variety of meals, including traditional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice and vegetables), momo (dumplings), and some basic international fare like noodles and fried rice. As you ascend into the more remote and high-altitude areas of Upper Dolpo, food options become more limited due to the remoteness and lack of infrastructure.

Meals are typically prepared by the trekking support crew and consist of energy-rich, easy-to-cook items like boiled potatoes, pasta, rice, lentil soup, tsampa (roasted barley flour), and seasonal vegetables when available. Breakfasts may include porridge, chapati, eggs, or Tibetan bread served with tea or coffee. While fresh produce and meat are scarce at higher elevations, your trekking team often carries dried fruits, nuts, and other nutritional snacks to supplement the diet. Meals are nourishing, warm, and vital for maintaining strength during this rugged and high-altitude adventure.

What to Expect

A Hidden Gem for Hiking in Nepal

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience while hiking in Nepal, the Upper Dolpo Trek offers one of the most remote and untouched journeys in the Himalayas. Unlike the popular trails of Everest or Annapurna, Upper Dolpo is isolated, wild, and sparsely populated, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty. This high-altitude trek is physically demanding and requires a strong spirit of adventure, but the rewards are exceptional.

Remote Trails and Challenging Passes

The trails through Upper Dolpo are rugged and often steep, leading you across dramatic ridges, deep river gorges, and high mountain passes like Kang La and Sela La, both soaring above 5,000 meters. You’ll be hiking for hours each day in an environment where the landscape constantly shifts—from arid valleys to alpine meadows and glacial basins. The remoteness adds to the challenge, but also to the sense of discovery that defines hiking in Nepal’s far western region.

High Altitude Adventure

Upper Dolpo lies in the trans-Himalayan zone, and much of the trek takes place above 4,000 meters. With thin air and cold conditions—especially at night—this is a true high-altitude hiking experience. Acclimatization is critical, and itineraries include rest days to adapt to the elevation. Trekkers must be physically fit and mentally prepared for basic conditions and long walking days.

Camping in the Wilderness

Unlike more developed trekking areas, Upper Dolpo lacks extensive tea house infrastructure, so you’ll be camping in tents for most of the journey. A full support crew typically includes guides, cooks, and porters who set up camp and prepare meals. While some basic lodges or homes may be available in select villages, this trek is best suited for those ready to embrace nature and simplicity. It’s the wilder side of hiking in Nepal—closer to the elements and far from the crowds.

Rich Tibetan Culture and Ancient Monasteries

Upper Dolpo is deeply spiritual and culturally fascinating. Strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion, the region is home to some of Nepal’s oldest monasteries, including the sacred Shey Gompa. As you pass through traditional villages like Saldang, Ringmo, and Tinje, you’ll witness timeless lifestyles, yak caravans, and beautifully preserved Tibetan-style architecture. Cultural encounters are a highlight of this trek.

Breathtaking Scenery and Shey Phoksundo Lake

The landscapes are as diverse as they are dramatic. From stark desert-like valleys to snowy peaks, Upper Dolpo showcases the incredible contrasts that make hiking in Nepal so compelling. The jewel of the region is Shey Phoksundo Lake, a turquoise alpine lake surrounded by cliffs and forests—one of the most photogenic spots in the Himalayas. Wildlife such as blue sheep, Himalayan griffons, and even snow leopards roam the area within Shey Phoksundo National Park.

A True Wilderness Escape

Expect no phone network, no Wi-Fi, and no modern distractions. This is your chance to disconnect fully and immerse yourself in the Himalayan wilderness. It’s an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and discover why Upper Dolpo is one of the most rewarding and spiritually uplifting places for hiking in Nepal.
