FAQs

What is the Shoton Festival?
The Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Festival, is one of Tibet’s most important cultural events. Held annually in Lhasa, it celebrates Tibetan Buddhism with grand Thangka unveilings, prayers, traditional rituals, and festivities. The festival marks the end of a period of fasting and meditation for monks and is a time for the Tibetan community to gather and celebrate.
How high is Lhasa and how does the altitude affect travelers?
Lhasa sits at an altitude of 3,650 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level. While many travelers can adjust to the altitude without issues, it’s important to take it easy in the first few days. Symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches or shortness of breath, can occur, so it’s advisable to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity, and allow time for acclimatization.
Is the Shoton Festival the only festival celebrated in Tibet?
No, Tibet has a rich cultural calendar with many important festivals. Besides the Shoton Festival, Losar (Tibetan New Year), the Saga Dawa Festival, and the Monlam Prayer Festival are some of the other significant events. Each festival celebrates Tibetan culture, spirituality, and community life in unique ways.
Are there any special rituals during the Shoton Festival?
Yes, the Shoton Festival is famous for the unveiling of Thangkas, which are giant embroidered religious scrolls depicting Buddhist deities, usually displayed on the hillside. Monks perform a special ritual during the Thangka unveiling, and pilgrims offer yak yogurt to the monks as part of the festival. The event also includes traditional performances, prayers, and public gatherings.
What should I wear in Tibet?
Tibet’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm, especially in August. You should pack layers of clothing, including lightweight, long-sleeve shirts, warm jackets for the evenings, and comfortable shoes for walking. If you’re attending religious ceremonies, be respectful and wear modest clothing.
Are there any health precautions I should take before traveling to Tibet?
Aside from preparing for the altitude, it’s advisable to carry any prescribed medications and bring basic medical supplies such as pain relievers and antiseptic ointments. Consult with your doctor before traveling, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition, and make sure you’re up to date on any necessary vaccinations for travel to Tibet.
Is it safe to travel to Tibet?
Yes, Tibet is generally safe for travelers. However, due to its high altitude, it’s important to take the necessary precautions for altitude sickness and follow your guide’s advice. Also, be mindful of local customs, particularly in sacred places, and always respect the cultural and spiritual significance of the sites you visit.
