This journey offers a rich culinary experience that reflects the diverse cultures and landscapes of Bhutan and Nepal.
In Bhutan, expect flavorful traditional dishes such as ema datshi (chilies and cheese), red rice, and hearty stews. The cuisine here is simple, fresh, and often quite spicy, with a strong emphasis on local ingredients and home-style preparation.
As you travel through Nepal, you’ll enjoy classic Nepali meals like dal bhat, a wholesome combination of rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickles, served in many local styles. In Mustang, a highlight of the trip will be a traditional Thakali meal, celebrated for its variety, balance, and bold flavors, deeply rooted in Himalayan culture.
Throughout the journey, you’ll also find a good selection of Western and continental dishes readily available, whether you’re in a mountain town or a major city. From pasta and grilled meats to fresh salads and bakery-style breakfasts, the menu often includes something for every palate.
Cultural Encounters
This journey offers a deep dive into the living cultures of Bhutan and Nepal. Expect to witness prayer-flag-lined mountain passes, serene monasteries echoing with chants, and vibrant local markets. From the spiritual calm of Bhutanese dzongs to the artistic richness of Nepal’s ancient cities, each day will reveal a new layer of tradition and community life. You’ll also interact with locals—monks, artisans, farmers—who make these regions so distinct and memorable.
Scenic Journeys
This tour features some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Himalayas. In Bhutan, you’ll drive along forested valleys and misty mountain roads. In Nepal, you’ll enjoy a dramatic flight along the Himalayan spine to Pokhara and into the remote kingdom of Mustang. Expect panoramic views of peaks like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, barren high-altitude deserts, and deep river gorges. Some road segments, especially in Mustang, may be rugged, but the views are more than worth it.
Altitude and Travel Pace
The itinerary gradually ascends from the lower elevations of Thimphu and Kathmandu to the higher, drier region of Mustang. While Mustang is not extremely high by Himalayan standards, you will feel the change in altitude. We’ve allowed time for your body to adjust and designed the program to include light activity, plenty of breaks, and well-timed rest days. Guests are encouraged to walk at their own pace and stay hydrated.
Cuisine and Dining
Food will be a highlight. You’ll sample the spicy, hearty flavors of Bhutanese cuisine and the diverse palette of Nepalese food. In Mustang, you’ll get to enjoy an authentic Thakali meal, considered one of Nepal’s most beloved traditional dishes. Throughout the tour, there’s also easy access to western and international options, especially in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, ensuring comfort for every palate.
Early Starts, Flexible Days
Some experiences, such as morning flights or monastery rituals, require early starts, but the overall pace is never rushed. Afternoons often leave room to unwind at your lodge, take a walk through a village, or explore a market at your leisure. There’s a good balance between structured activities and personal time, so the journey feels fulfilling but not overwhelming.
